5 Questions With... Peter Sheahan
5 Questions With... Peter Sheahan

We recently had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Peter Sheahan, voted one of the top 25 speakers in the world, to see what he's been up to.

1. We first heard about you when you authored best-selling book Generation Y, tell us what is the latest in the “generations” world...

I think we have moved beyond thinking about the major changes we face as just being generational. Business models are shifting (some will even cease to exist), the talent shortage is getting worse and smart people of all ages want a great place to work and inspiring leadership. In other words it is about business and organisational transformation not just generational change.

2. The big news is that you have a new book out, how did you come up with the title?

The book Making it Happen came about because of a discovery that there is no shortage of great ideas out there. Seriously, I am yet to work with an organisation that does not have a number of great ideas, and in many cases initiatives to exploit them. The problem is execution. They don’t know how to make it happen. This is why I wrote the new book. It outlines the 5 competencies an individual must master to execute on their ideas.

3. What are the 3 or 4 main points of the book?

The most fascinating part of the book I think are the sections on Positioning and Influence. Over the last 3 years I have collated the most cutting-edge research available on what drives human behaviour and how people make decisions. In Making it Happen I was able to distil that down and then apply it to how we market products, position ideas and build brands. We then took it a step further and analysed how in a one on one or one on many situation you can use this understanding to influence others to buy from you, support your cause and engage in your change agenda. This new insight should be compulsory education for anyone leading a team or selling a product or service.

4. What can we expect in your new live presentations?

Having worked in 15 different countries and with some of the world’s leading companies (Google, Cisco, Harley Davidson, Goldman Sachs, Hilton Hotels) my presentations are rich in real world case studies. Sure, I still bring the “show” and put a lot of work into the performance itself but these days my clients are loving the fact that I can show them how to apply interesting theory in the real world and can bring evidence and case studies of people and companies who have done it successfully.

5. When are you available for speaking engagements in Australia this year?

My Australian focus is on road-shows. Due to my calendar I have not accepted road-shows in the past, but these days it makes perfect sense. I will travel back to Australia especially for a road-show. For one off keynotes and conferences my availability is early to mid April, most of July, Early October and January 2011. The fact that Is spend the vast majority of the year in North America and Europe is a good thing. I get to bring back to Australia some fascinating global case studies, and the conferences I do speak at have the added advantage of knowing I am not going to be at 100 other conferences in the same year.

A Standing Ovation to....
A Standing Ovation to....

Natalie Cook for an incredible and inspirational keynote for Stella Travel Services in Shanghai -

“Your contribution to our conference event was nothing short of spectacular, particularly when many businesses have found themselves in challenging times during the year. Your inspirational address has shown them that they can achieve great things in both business and their personal lives - even through the most challenging of times - and obstacles are just small bumps in life, rather than road blocks. To say you made an impression with our delegates would be the greatest understatement of all times. The spontaneous, standing ovation from our audience said it all! Nat, as we know, all of Australia loves a hero - you have become just that - a hero - to all of our audience of 400 delegates. And, you now have 400 "Natalie ambassadors" who will be cheering you every step of the way as you continue your wonderful sporting career.”
